A tick climbs a blade of grass or a low branch, holds its front legs out and waits for something to walk by. That behavior requires humidity, so open sunny turf kills them off fast. The risk sits at the boundary between your mowed lawn and whatever is next to it, which is where dogs and kids cut through.
